From the end of the Civil War to the beginning of the Great Depression industrialists, financiers, and prominent railroad builders came to the Adirondacks to create their family vacation retreats. This unique episode in our history has helped to create the ADK that we now know today. Sadly, many of these grand estates and land tracts have burned, been divided & sold, torn down - lost permanently. Fortunately some still remain, and over the years there has been a growing interest in the preservation of these magnificent architectural wonders.
